![]() ![]() Add to this the macabre music, with its selection of synthesisers, pianos, bells, strings and sparse percussion and you have true, unadulterated terror in audio form. The exemplary sound and music only heighten this feeling of dread further, with the delicate sounds of birdsong in the daylight sections swiftly giving way to demented footsteps crunching on gravel. ![]() When Slenderman himself is near, the screen crackles and flashes green - a good sign to run away as fast as you can! It’s all very well done, often playing on your mind and making you see things that aren’t really there. Many missions start with the saving grace of daylight, complete with soft wind blowing through the trees, before dropping you into an environment where only flickering lights or your torch can aid your vision this juxtaposition makes the dark seem all the darker. The art style homes a minimalist blend of murky, somber tones, drawing you into both the story and community of Oakside. For everyone else though, the small pain of the mines do give way to a fabulous horror experience. The whole concept of Slenderman as a paranormal character will also irritate some, as he can teleport and find you whenever he pleases - if this sounds like something that’ll bother you then stay well away. Finding the generators (which spawn in different places every time you die) can be an annoyance when you’re being chased by not only Slendy himself, but by a bloodthirsty ghoul too. Unfortunately though, the mine level can prove to be a real frustration, especially on the harder difficulty levels. The gameplay mainly revolves around exploring these dark and dingy locales, which are effectively basic mazes, to complete the aforementioned tasks. The changes in scenery help keep things fresh, whilst also allowing for differing scare tactics to be employed and played to the strengths of the location. There are also clues to find throughout that flesh-out the story of the Matheson family, and their Slenderman shaped curse. There’s even a flashback level, (triggered by your character finding and playing an unmarked VHS - yes, chums, a VHS!) set on a beaten up old farm, complete with staple treacherous corn field. Some sections require you to explore claustrophobic areas like an ominous house, mine, cellar, or church, whilst others ask you to roam larger areas in order to collect a certain amount of pages (ala the freeware title), or turn on a certain number of generators. Your only friend in these creepy climes is your trusty torch, something you’ll really grow to love and hate in equal measure! You play as an unknown fellow/fellow-ess, documenting the scary surroundings of fictional mountain town Oakside on a Blair Witch-esque camcorder, complete with flashing REC light and timer. This freeware game was designed and released on PC by Mark Hadley of Parsec Productions, who is also involved here. Spawned originally as an internet meme, Slenderman’s first foray into gaming was with Slender: The Eight Pages. I can see why people hate this game, but i for one enjoy it even if there are many better horror games.Created by Blue Isle Studios, in collaboration with the character’s creator Eric Knudsen, Slender: The Arrival is a fantastic example of how to instill fear and genuine terror in the player. Its slightly expanded on as it has a little bit more of a story and makes the game a little more personal and the graphics have been updated. This game was a mod that got enough of a fallowing that they decided to make a full release. A great comparison is Surgeon Simulator 2013. But although i do like it, its nothing exceptional. I like waiting for something to get me, and the idea of bieng hunted by something that cant be killed is a great idea for a horror game. But the one thing that will either make or break this game for you is if you can forgive the fact that 90% of the scares in this game are jump scares. I enjoyed it very much as the atmosphere sets up a very scary experience. But the one thing that will A great expansion on the original game. ![]()
